Waste from ships
All waste from ships, including cargo residues, that emerges while operating, loading, unloading or washing the ship, and that is covered by annex I, II, IV, V and VI in the MARPOL convention are regulated through SFS 1980:789. This also includes passively fished waste.
The definition of cargo residues generally includes all types of cargo residues that is still on deck or in cargo holds after loading or unloading and surplus and spillage that originates from loading or unloading the ship, irrespective of if the cargo residues are wet, dry or mixed up with washing water. This does not include small remains of cargo dust still on deck after sweeping, nor dust gathered on the ships external surfaces.

Marpol annex II – Noxious Liquid Substances in Bulk
Noxious liquid substances include all substances listed in the charts of chapter 17 and 18 in the IBC code as well as records of substances classified as category X, Y or Z substances that can be attributed to, but is yet to be included in the IBC code. Note that this only applies given that the substances eligible under the definition under the first paragraph of regulation 2006:1321.

Marpol annex IV – Sewage
Sewage includes:
- Drainage and other wastes from any form of toilets and urinals.
- Drainage from medical premises (dispensary, sick bay, etc.) via wash basins, wash tubs and scuppers located in such premises.
- Drainage from spaces containing living animals.
- Other waste waters when mixed with the drainages defined above.

Marpol annex V – Garbage
Garbage includes all types of food waste, domestic wastes, operational wastes, plastic, cargo residues, incinerator ashes, cooking oil, fishing gear and animal carcasses that is generated through the operating of the ship and that is continuously disposed of. This does not include waste that is otherwise specified or defined in TSFS 2010:96.
Garbage does not include fresh fish or parts of fish generated trough fishing within the operation of the ship or through aquaculture operations.
Aquaculture operations include transport of fish and shellfish to aquaculture facilities as well as transportation of harvested fish and shellfish from this type of facilities to land for preparation.
