Export and temporary registration
If you are going to sell a vehicle to a private individual or a company abroad, you must notify us that the vehicle is to be deregistered due to export.
We recommend that the buyer applies for temporary registration before exporting as it is a sure way to get the vehicle deregistered.

If it is not possible to apply for temporary registration
If the buyer is unable to apply for temporary registration, the Swedish Transport Agency needs to receive the following:
- Notification of deregistration due to export
- Document that clearly shows that the vehicle has been permanently removed from Sweden
- The vehicle’s license plates
Notification of deregistration due to export
Notification of deregistration due to export to countries outside the EU/EEA must be made on part 2 of the vehicle's most recently issued registration certificate.
If the vehicle has been exported to a country within the EU/EEA, the notification can instead be made on the form "Notification of deregistration when exporting a Swedish-registered vehicle within the EU/EEA" or on a copy of the registration certificate part 2 - front and back.
A document that clearly shows that the vehicle has been permanently removed from Sweden
For example, it could be one of the following:
- A copy of a foreign registration certificate issued in the country of destination when the vehicle was registered there.
- A written confirmation from the registration authority of the country of destination showing that the vehicle is registered there.
- A copy of the customs document clearly showing that the vehicle has been cleared through customs.
- A certificate from a professional transporter showing that the vehicle has been taken out of the country to another named country.
Examples of documents that are not accepted as certificates for export include receipts, invoices or purchase agreements. Such documents do not show that the vehicle has been exported from Sweden.
The vehicle’s license plates
- You can fold the signs to fit them in an envelope.
When the notification is received
Once we have received a complete notification in accordance with the items above, the vehicle will be deregistered. If any of these are missing, the vehicle will not be deregistered. This means that the vehicle remains in the Swedish road traffic register with the seller as the continued registered owner until the requirements are met.
The seller is responsible for ensuring that the 3 above mentioned parts are sent to the Swedish Transport Agency. Please note that you must both pay vehicle tax and have motor insurance for the vehicle until it is deregistered, unless it has been taken off the road.
The only way to have the vehicle deregistered before it has left Sweden is to apply for and be granted temporary registration due to export.
Moving to another EU or EEA country
If you are moving to another EU or EEA country and are taking your vehicle with you, you need to register your vehicle in the other Member State, and then deregister it in Sweden.
In the case of registration in the other Member State, the registration authority may require both Part 1 and Part 2 of the registration certificate to certify the right to register the vehicle.
The registration authority of the other Member State shall notify Sweden that the vehicle is registered there. If the notification is received before you have reported the deregistration yourself, it can serve as a basis for the Swedish Transport Agency to deregister the vehicle in Sweden.
Please note that this may take time and that some Member States will still not notify us of the registration. Therefore, it is important that you make sure that the Swedish Transport Agency receives a complete notification of export. The same rules for notification apply as if you had sold the vehicle, see the items above.
For more information, see Registering your car in another EU country - Your Europe (europa.eu).
Moving to a country outside the EU/EEA
If you are moving to a country outside the EU/EEA and bringing your vehicle with you, you need to submit a notification of deregistration due to export. The same rules apply to the notification as if you had sold the vehicle to a buyer who is going to export the vehicle to a country outside the EU/EEA, see the items above.
