Step 3 - Take out road traffic insurance for temporary registration with a Swedish insurance company

Take out road traffic insurance for temporary registration with a Swedish insurance company if you are applying for temporary registration in conjunction with verification of origin.

You will receive a traffic insurance certificate from your insurance company. Send it to us together with your application for verification of origin. This is a special certificate which states the insurance company's company code, the name of the policyholder and basic information about the insured vehicle. The certificate is usually valid for 30 or 90 days.

Do you need to apply for temporary registration?

If the vehicle has valid foreign registration and valid foreign traffic insurance, you may drive it for no longer than one week from when the vehicle was brought into Sweden. You will require temporary registration if you want to be able to drive the vehicle after the first week.

The only exception is when you are going to a vehicle inspection facility for the registration inspection. You are then allowed to drive your vehicle the shortest possible route to and from the inspection facility that day, but only if you have a written proof that you have an appointment for a registration inspection. You also have to have a valid traffic insurance for your vehicle. You can get a written proof from the vehicle inspection facility you are going to visit.

When you apply for a verification of origin, you should state if you intend to apply for temporary registration. The decision of whether to assign temporary registration for your vehicle or not, is taken first after the verification of origin is approved.

The Swedish Transport Agency will grant either unrestricted or restricted use in connection with the temporary registration of imported vehicles.

Please note! If your vehicle is imported from a country outside of EU/EEA, the temporary registration will always be restricted. This means that you only are allowed to drive your vehicle the shortest possible route:

  • from a port, railway station, customs, workshop or similar to a place or facility where your vehicle can be kept until it is time for the registration inspection
  • to and from the registration inspection.
