Infrastructure management

Safety permits for railway infrastructure

An infrastructure manager may perform the following tasks: manage and operate the infrastructure, allocate capacity, levy charges, provide services, produce a network statement, determine who is entitled to conduct or organise passenger traffic and to manage traffic. The Railway Act provides scope to allow someone else to conduct traffic management, for instance. This person also needs a permit for infrastructure management but this is limited to traffic management only.

The appraisal involves checking professional knowledge, financial soundness and good reputation for this activity, and regular checking of the negotiability of the track installation by an inspector.
